Travel Fails – Our mistakes, mishaps and embarrassments while travelling

I find that preparing for a trip is a big part of the fun of going somewhere you’ve never been. You get to look at maps for countless hours, trying to figure out the best routes, the best itineraries.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about military schedule preparation here, I’m talking about trying to make the most of your pre-departure time to get to learn about the country; its hidden secrets, its best vantage points, its “only locals know this” tips. Once arrived at my destination, I find that knowing these things lets me unwind faster, and enjoy in a better way every minute of my stay. Because where would the fun be if your travel schedule was timed like clockwork, and you did not have time to wander, get lost, or simply enjoy the moment while looking at your surroundings?

But one cannot be prepared for all eventualities…

I sometimes set out on vague ideas. Don’t blame me; it’s my travel personality that is the one responsible. I’ve had plenty of crazy, useless, weird or downright dangerous ideas during my travels. Simon tries to put some sense into me, but I’m not listening. I have a goal, and I’m here to reach it! So in this « Travel Fails » section, you’ll bear witness to some of our ridiculous mishaps, our travel experiences that went wrong due to various reasons/my poor judgment.

Dubai, 50º C under the shade. Where the hell is the shade?!

While traveling, one can only hope the elements will all be aligned to offer the best of experiences. But no matter how hard you’re going to plan this trip, either crappy weather, cryptic maps, long distances, rude people, language barriers or a cranky mood can (and will!) trip you off.

So stay tuned for this Travel Fails section where I follow strangers into dark alleys, get a thorough pat down in the dead of night in a Middle Eastern airport, eat weird-looking unidentified meat, get harassed and followed and barf my way through sand dunes in a 4×4.

Because… isn’t that the joy of traveling? Knowing that not everything goes exactly as planned, and trying to find the positive outcome out of a perfectly ridiculous situation? I’ll let you be the judges of that!

So true! The travel fail category was one of the first ones I added to my blog. Sometimes the fails make the best stories, that is, if you can survive them or if you have the guts to tell the world about them.
