We were greeted by a cool tropical breeze coming in from the open door, the white curtains swirling as we entered our villa. “Welcome to your home for the week” said Hector, or I think that’s what he said; I couldn’t really concentrate on his words as I was too absorbed by the sight in front of me. Past the living room, in the most gorgeous late afternoon light was our own private terrace with our own private swimming pool. Sitting there, like waiting for us. Hector retreated discreetly, and we hurried outside and giggled like kids. Our stay in this gorgeous villa was going to be a memorable one ♥
For our vacation on the magnificent Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao, we wanted a hotel that would pamper us, help us relax after long days out exploring, and, let’s admit it, bask in a bit of luxury because isn’t that what exotic vacations are for?!
We were settling in at Acoya Hotel Suites and Villas, a tranquil 10-acre resort located in the island’s Bapor Kibra neighborhood. The huge yet cozy resort wraps around a lake, with lush gardens and pathways leading to one- or two-bedroom villas, or to the main 3-story building, all of this in the most peaceful setting possible. As we were checking in inside the main building’s lobby, we were able to get a glimpse of the terrace overlooking the gorgeous pool and inviting sunbeds, where we would spend many late afternoons relaxing after a long day of exploring the island and trying out everything Curaçao has to offer.
The resort is gorgeous and extremely well-maintained. It’s vast, quiet and very private; you won’t find a huge party scene here but rather a more sophisticated ambiance, especially at night when patrons come to dine at the excellent Seasons restaurant. We had the pleasure of enjoying a delicious meal here with flavorful drinks out on the terrace overlooking the sprawling pool. The breeze was just perfect, as was the meal and the service.
During the day, the restaurant and pool area stay quiet as guests gather in the sunbeds to read or laze in the Caribbean sun. Out of the main lobby, it’s one of the hotel’s best feature: a vast infinity pool with a view of the lake and the lush tropical vegetation all around, and plenty of space not to step on anyone’s toes: the definition of luxury!
Our 2-bedroom villa was extremely spacious – even a bit too spacious for only a couple! It can cater to a large family and is ideal for two couples, each room having its own ensuite bathroom with rain shower and jacuzzi, private phone line and entrance. Our bedroom was immense and luminous, with high ceilings and a door leading to the terrace. The bathroom was also huge and extra clean, with a roomy shower and modern upscale finishes. The main living areas are open space, with plenty of light coming from large windows in all of the rooms. Our unit also included a near-full-service kitchen and spacious dining room, perfect for a romantic supper followed by -you guessed it!- a dip in our own private pool.
And oh, that pool! It was everything we could have hoped for. We would wake early to the sound of the birds in the palmtrees, and jump right into the water. Feeling energized, we would eat our breakfast on the terrace and indulge in the peacefulness of those quiet mornings; the courtyard was extremely private and we really enjoyed reading on the lounge chairs before going about our day. The pool made our late afternoons something we were looking forward to: after exploring every corner of the island, there was nothing better than a glass of crisp rosé on the terrace, our feet in the water. Definitely something we would recommend to everyone!
Acoya Hotel offers free WiFi and free parking. Villas have full kitchens – though no pots and pans; those can be rented out – which makes it extra easy to cook your own meals to save money – or to spend more time on your terrace!
The hotel offers a free shuttle twice a day to downtown Willemstad, the island’s capital, and to the beach at Curaçao Beach Boulevard, with complimentary access to the lounge chairs at Madero Beach Club, which is a very nice attention. The shuttle back to the hotel is at 3PM, which is a bit early for my beach-bum person, but this gives you time to also be driven to a local supermarket at around 4PM for a bit of grocery-shopping.
The hotel has 24hr security and the very friendly guards on duty (hi Eugene!) also double as your private shuttle drivers; in the week we were there, it was great to have time to get to know them better.
Bapor Kibra, the neighborhood where Acoya hotel is located in, is a perfect spot for its proximity to plenty of restaurants and shops, to attractions such as beach clubs or the seaquarium, and to the town of Willemstad.

We paid for our week’s accommodation but received a complimentary upgrade to a private 2-bedroom villa. Masha danki to Niels for the incredible welcome and a lovely evening eating delicious food in good company under the Curaçao breeze.
